Vuls start fast,
but finish cold

Tribune-Herald

University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s basketball coach Jeff Law couldn’t fault his team’s start or its intensity — just the finish.

Hampered by 23.5 percent shooting in the second half, the Vulcans started off a three-game mainland road trip with a 77-64 loss to Grand Canyon in Phoenix.

Mychael Hearn scored a game-high 17 points for UHH (7-7, 1-5 Pacific West Conference), but it was a tale of two halves that doomed the Vuls.

They led by as many as 13 in the first half on the strength of 7-of-16 shooting from 3-point range.

The Antelopes (9-5, 3-3) used a run to take a three-point lead at halftime, and from their UHH lost its touch.

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” Law said after UHH made only 2 of 14 from 3-point range in the second half. “We missed everything.”

Jerome Garrison scored 16 points for Grand Canyon, which held a 53-36 rebounding advantage.

Zachary Wilde had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Vuls, who will try again Saturday at California Baptist.

Grand Canyon 49, UHH women 40: Maylinn Smith scored 14 points as the Antelopes won their ninth straight to improve to 13-1.

Hillary Hurley led UHH with 12 points, but the Vuls shot just 31.9 percent. UHH (7-7, 4-2) trailed by only one at halftime before it went cold from the floor.

“Can’t fault the effort, the team played hard,” UHH coach David Kaneshiro said.
